Young fundraisers dance to their own beat

February 10 2011

For Ms. Terheggen’s 3rd grade class at Bergeson Elementary School in Laguna Niguel, CA there’s a certain amount of “fun” that comes with fundraising! Ms. Terheggen’s class decided that, instead of just learning in an “African adventure” themed classroom, they wanted to make an impact in the lives of the African people they were learning about. To achieve their goal, they decided to work together to raise money for Nothing But Nets, sending nets to save lives.

Leftover change from lunch or spare allowance money brought in from home is collected daily at the front of the room. To add to the experience, Ms. Terheggen plays music from around Africa for the students and they dance from their seats to the front of the classroom to add their change.

As Ms. Terheggen herself says, “Part of the fun is getting to dance with the children and express our different styles of movement!” For every $10 the kids raise, they add another mosquito onto the net they have hanging in their classroom. As you can see in the photo, they’ve saved quite a few lives already, having collected over $150 already this school year! Thanks to these students, that’s 15 more life-saving nets that will be sent to help families protect themselves from malaria.

Thank you so much to Ms. Terheggen and her young global givers for all their work!
