This weekend I had the privilege to participate in the Y35 Summit Series and present to a group of 135 young philanthropists at Aspen09, a summit of business leaders ages 18-35 who are the world’s most influential young innovators.
It was an incredible weekend. I spoke about the UN Foundation, Nothing But Nets, and how we seek to provide innovative ways in which individuals can get involved in philanthropy. I was happy to be able to show how the UN Foundation can respond quickly to fresh ideas of how to support the UN. The best part was working with the conference organizers to pose a challenge to see who could push out the Nothing But Nets campaign the furthest. The entire audience began sending messages through their Facebook pages and Twitter accounts - all the new media avenues that I am still catching up on!
The energy was contagious! Not only were the participants pushing out Nothing But Nets, but they were also spontaneously donating funds! I feel like I witnessed a new era of philanthropy- an era in which young leaders can become engaged on the spot, whether through Facebook or a checkbook.
