WHO: Malaria spreading quickly and widely due to climate change

March 24 2008

Climate change doesn't just mean melting ice caps and a longer hurricane season anymore -- it’s actually affecting global health.  April 7 is World Health Day, and in celebration of World Health Organization’s 60th anniversary, the organization is releasing its annual report. According to ClimateWire, this year’s report tells us how changing weather and seasonal patterns are increasing the spread of mosquito and rodent-borne diseases and contributing to malnutrition around the world.

This isn't good news for those of us at Nothing But Nets trying to cover the African continent as quickly as we can with anti-malaria nets. It means we need all the help we can get to prevent the spread of the disease as longer seasons and warmer temperatures send mosquitoes to areas they don’t usually inhabit, including Kenya and western China. The WHO is aiming to generate awareness of this issue and is organizing a call to action to help governments stop the spread of disease through various traditional and newer initiatives. You can get a head start here at Nothing But Nets and send a net to save a life.
