University students in Korea help save lives during Fall Festival

October 15 2010

Last week, universities across South Korea were filled with the sound of music and laughter as students celebrated the annual Fall Festival, one of the biggest school events of the year. This year’s Fall Festival had an added element of excitement -- instead of just partaking in the usual concerts and games, many students also joined the global movement to end malaria.

Korean students used this national festival to celebrate saving lives through the United Nations Foundation’s Nets Go! campaign. A group of seven students from Chungang University in Anseong, about an hour away from the capital city of Seoul, steamed dumplings, fried pancakes, and made cotton candy to raise funds for 94 life-saving bed nets!

On the other side of the country in the southern port city of Busan, students at Pusan University exhibited illuminated bed nets and invited peers to write a message of hope like this one: “I’m a friend living in a land that is far away from Africa…I will help you…I will send you a bed net…Always smile. ♥”

Our friends in Korea remind us how anyone, anywhere, can join the global movement to end malaria!
