UN Secretary-General Praises "Remarkable Progress" for Malaria Movement

February 02 2011

The buzz is catching on and your efforts to prevent malaria are being noticed! Speaking on Monday at the African Leaders Malaria Alliance event in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon singled out malaria reduction for special praise among efforts to achieve the UN’s Millennium Development Goals.

The Secretary-General highlighted the fact that 290 million nets have been delivered to Africa since 2008. In 11 African countries, malaria has been cut in half since 2000. Those staggering numbers are in part thanks to supporters of Nothing But Nets. "Universal coverage isn’t just a hope," Ban said, "It’s within our grasp."

“This alliance against malaria is stopping the disease and saving thousands of lives. It is a great success story. You are bringing us closer to our Millennium Development Goal on malaria and showing how we can reach all the MDGs: with commitment at the highest level.” The Secretary-General noted bed nets as one of the most effective methods for preventing malaria, as he called on world leaders to support malaria reduction at the highest level, and it all starts with YOU.

Nothing But Nets’ supporters are part of the global outreach campaign, person to person, spreading the buzz about malaria and encouraging people around them to send a net and save a life. Keep up the great work!
