The Lion King Roars Through Houston To Send Nets and Save Lives!

August 07 2012

The old saying is true—everything really is bigger in Texas. That includes the generosity of the good people of Houston, the latest stop in the Nothing But Nets team’s travels nationwide with The Lion King: Gazelle Tour. So far, we’ve joined the production on Broadway and in Orlando, and will appear in St. Louis soon.

The musical showcases the beauty and majesty of Africa, a place deeply connected with Nothing But Nets’ work to end malaria. Most of the people infected with malaria live in sub-Saharan Africa. Thanks to our generous partners and committed grassroots supporters in places like Houston, together we are making a difference against the disease!

Before the show, we held a reception with some of our biggest partners, including ExxonMobil, the Houston Dynamo, the Houston Rockets, and United Nations Association Houston. Spicing up the evening was a meet-and-greet with Lion King cast members, and the lively and hilarious NBA legends Kevin Loder, Major Jones and Robert Reid, all formerly of the Houston Rockets.

While the spectacle of The Lion King onstage was awe-inspiring, the real stars of the night were the youth of Jacksonville United Methodist Church. These incredible young people have raised more than $38,000 for Nothing But Nets—and are aiming to raise $200,000 by 2014. We were thrilled to honor them for their commitment to ending malaria in this generation.

We thank the city of Houston and The Lion King for their support of Nothing But Nets and for joining the fight against malaria!
