Send Nets. Save Lives. Donate Photos.

June 01 2016

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but 10 pictures are worth a life-saving bed net and the Johnson & Johnson Donate a Photo app is the easiest way to join Nothing But Nets in the fight to end malaria.

With every photo donated through the app, Johnson & Johnson will donate $1 to Nothing But Nets. The math is pretty simple; it takes only 10 photos to raise the money to purchase and deliver one bed-net and educate the recipient on its proper use. .

So far, participants of Donate a Photo have contributed 356 nets, but there is still a lot of work to be done to reach our goal of 5,000 nets. Now this goal of 50,000 photos may sound like a stretch, but it is as easy as 1,2,3 to donate and support Nothing But Nets:

  1. Download the Donate a Photo app
  2. Select Nothing But Nets as the cause you support
  3. Take a picture of anything (you, your dog, you and your dog- anything!) and share it!

It really is that easy. You don’t even have to post your photo on social media it that’s not your thing. Snap a photo every day for 10 days and one net will be provided to protect a refugee family living in Rwanda, where our current emergency response efforts are focused.

Tremendous progress has been made in Rwanda over the past 11 years. According to the 2015 WHO Health Statistics Report, there has been a 74% reduction in malaria deaths  and a 71% reduction in confirmed malaria cases over a decade.

Rwanda is roughly the size of Maryland, with a current population of 11.8 million people which is similar to the population of Ohio. However, around 148,000 refugees have moved into the area according to the UN Refugee Agency’s 2015 report. Over half of these refugees are reported to be in a state of severe emergency.

This is where the bed net plays an important role in the health of these vulnerable refugees. Over 4.2 million insecticide-treated bed nets have been distributed across Rwanda since 2005, and as a result, new malaria infections and deaths have decreased significantly. This recent influx of refugees from neighboring conflict zones in Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo pose a threat to this tremendous progress. We need everyone’s help to reinforce our commitment to ending malaria in Rwanda.

Nothing But Nets is a recipient on the “Donate A Photo” app until July 31st, so we still have time to come together and reach our goal. As you scroll through thousands of images on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter today, consider if each of those photos was donated to fight malaria. A picture can be worth so much more than 1,000 words when you download the Johnson & Johnson Donate a Photo app and start posting your photos today.
