Golden State Warriors point guard and Nothing But Nets supporter Stephen Curry broke the NBA record Wednesday night for three pointers made in a single season. What most NBA fans don’t know is that Curry is donating three life-saving bed nets for every three he sinks this season to help protect families in sub-Saharan Africa from malaria.
A longtime supporter of the United Nations Foundation's Nothing But Nets campaign, Curry launched his Three for Three Challenge last fall, and will send 816 insecticide-treated bed nets and counting to protect hundreds of families from malaria-carrying mosquitoes. "Stephen Curry's record-breaking performance this season made basketball history, and will help make malaria history," said Chris Helfrich, Director of Nothing But Nets. "Nothing But Nets congratulates him on his achievement, and we are proud to call Curry a true Champion in the fight against malaria.”
Making league history, four-year veteran Curry surpassed Ray Allen's record of 269 threes during the Warriors’ final regular season game, against the Portland Trail Blazers. Curry has helped lead the Warriors to the NBA playoffs for the first time since 2007. His three-point milestone comes on the eve of World Malaria Day April 25, a day focused on sustaining the gains against this preventable disease and energizing efforts to end malaria deaths.
Curry’s generous Three for Three Challenge will help Nothing But Nets provide partners in Chad, Madagascar, Zimbabwe, and other countries in Africa with critically needed bed nets. Every 60 seconds a child dies from malaria. But bed nets provide a simple, cost-effective solution, and can reduce the spread of malaria by up to 90 percent in areas with high coverage rates.
Since 2006, generous supporters have given Nothing But Nets more than $45 million to send over 7 million bed nets to mothers and children across Africa. It takes just $10 to send a net and save a life. For more information on Nothing But Nets, visit NothingButNets.net.
