Toward the end of last year, we had an extra mosquito costume we were trying to get off our hands. As some of you may remember, we had a contest to see who among our all-star supporters could come up with the best idea for its use. We put a call out on Facebook and Twitter, and your ideas came in! One of the ideas we loved came from a Cub Scout leader in Virginia named Steve, who thought the best place for this costume was on ice.
Steve and his Scouts hosted a skating event at a local ice rink. To promote the event, Steve wore the infamous mosquito suit to a pack meeting and even to their district roundtable, where he shared the event with other local pack leaders. On the day of the event, they charged $10 per skater so that each person on the ice was sending a net and saving a life. By the end of the day, the Scouts raised enough to send 100 life-saving bed nets!
So while the mosquito costume may not be fashionable, it’s definitely a good way to get people’s attention and spread the buzz about malaria!
