In five years, Nothing But Nets has brought together the world’s largest group of partners and grassroots supporters to send nets to save lives from malaria. We’ve worked with everyone from athletes and ambassadors to boy scouts and bishops to spread the buzz about the fight to end this deadly disease. This World Malaria Day, we’re taking the buzz to Broadway!
Curious about how the fight against malaria fits with Broadway glitz? Nothing But Nets recently launched a partnership with the Nederlander Organization and Disney Theatrical Productions to send insecticide-treated bed nets to South Sudan in honor of World Malaria Day. Dozens of theaters across the country have jumped onboard to raise money for Nothing But Nets and spread the buzz about our appeal to send 100,000 nets to South Sudan. At theaters in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Durham, Tucson, San Jose, and San Diego, Nederlander is spreading the buzz to audiences, and today, six Broadway theatres in New York are raising money to help us reach our goal.
Disney’s The Lion King on Broadway – now the highest grossing Broadway play in history – has also signed on as a Nothing But Nets partner. The show has connected millions of Americans to Africa for 15 years, so it makes sense that The Lion King and Nothing But Nets work together to stop the leading cause of death among children on the continent. At select shows, theatregoers will be urged to donate $10 to send nets and save lives in South Sudan.
Right now, thousands of people are fleeing conflict along the Sudanese border to refugee camps in South Sudan. The last thing these families should have to worry about once they are safe from violence is contracting malaria while they sleep. Money raised at the shows goes directly towards Nothing But Nets’ goal of sending 100,000 life-saving bed nets to refugees in South Sudan by World Malaria Day.
