Celebrating UN Day

October 24 2013

Happy birthday to the United Nations!

For 68 years, the UN has been working to improve the lives of people around the world. Did you know that the UN assists more than 34 million refugees and people fleeing war, famine, or persecution? It also promotes maternal health, saving the lives of 30 million women a year. And it helps the more than 370 million people in poverty around the world to live better lives.

Recent polls show that a significant majority of Americans support the UN’s work with refugees, women and children. In fact, 92% believe that the US should be supportive of the UN’s work to improve the health of women and children in developing countries by making sure they have access to vaccines and maternal care. This is exciting because our UN partners like UNHCR are working tirelessly to help protect vulnerable populations against deadly malaria. Over the last six years, we’ve worked with UNHCR to send more than a million life-saving bed nets to refugee families across Sub-Saharan Africa.

We are proud of our partnerships with other UN agencies such as the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) who are also critical in our efforts to prevent this deadly disease. The fight against malaria is a team effort. It involves everyone, ranging from UN agencies abroad, to our partners, champions, and grassroots supporters here at home.

Join us in celebrating UN Day by telling us why you support the UN. Tweet us your responses using the hashtag #UNDay and we’ll retweet our favorites. Happy UN Day!
