I couldn’t believe my eyes last Monday when I was standing with the Nothing But Nets team in Harlem’s historical Holcombe Rucker Park, surrounded by celebrities, athletes, kids and a life-sized mosquito!
The sun was shining and the music bumping as about 16 celebrity players lined up on the court to play in the inaugural Cavanagh Classic basketball game. Tom Cavanagh, actor, producer and director, and his wife Maureen organized this fantastic event to raise funds and awareness for Nothing But Nets! (Stay tuned for a special blog from the Cavanaghs about the game!)
The event kicked off with a some words from Tom and Nothing But Nets Director Elizabeth Gore, along with a guest appearance from the mosquito! Dre Britton served as the emcee for the game, and as the players battled it out on the court, the Nothing But Nets team equipped the crowd with wristbands and information about malaria prevention. During halftime, members of the New Heights youth group got to sport their Nothing But Nets t-shirts and test their basketball skills against some Harlem Magic Masters athletes!
The event was a huge success and everyone was a winner in the end for sending nets and saving lives. Check out David Bergman’s blog about the game, and join the Cavanagh’s Netraiser Team to support their efforts. The Nothing But Nets team can’t thank the Cavanaghs and participants enough for all of their support, and we are counting down to the next Cavanagh Classic!
