Today, the World Health Organization (WHO) certified Paraguay as free of malaria – the first country in the Americas to accomplish this milestone in 45 years. This certification is granted when a country has recorded zero malaria cases transmitted in-country for the past three consecutive years.

This historic moment signals that progress in ending this disease – which still claims the life of a child every two minutes –  is possible. This was further highlighted today in the release of WHO’s Elimination 2020 (E2020) report, which found an additional 10 of the 21 countries identified are on track for elimination by 2020.

Today, the First Lady of Haiti Martine Moïse and more than 300 government officials, civil society representatives, scientists and technical partners of the global health and development community gathered to celebrate World Malaria Day and increase awareness of Haiti’s commitment to eliminating malaria, a preventable yet deadly disease that threatens half the world’s population and kills a child every two minutes.

Last week, Congress passed a funding package for Fiscal Year 2018, which was later signed by the President, keeping the government open and pertinent programs funded through the end of September 2018.

Alexandra Daddario announced today that she is dedicating her birthday on March 16 to raise funds for the United Nations Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign and The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation (ETAF). The Baywatch star traveled to Malawi this past summer to visit programs supported by the two organizations.

The United Nations Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign and Sumitomo Chemical Company, Limited, one of Japan’s leading chemical companies, announced the third year of their partnership to help protect women, children, refugees, and vulnerable populations from malaria. The partnership will support Nothing But Nets’ work in sub-Saharan Africa, as well as the campaign’s new focus on ending malaria in Latin America and Caribbean. As part of the Every Woman, Every Child platform, the partnership helps to advance the unprecedented global movement that mobilizes and intensifies international and national action by governments, multilaterals, the private sector and civil society to address the major health challenges facing women, children and adolescents around the world.

On December 31, Under Armour and Stephen Curry, who serves as the Global Ambassador for the United Nations Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign, will release a limited-edition Curry 4 Low colorway to support the fight against malaria. For every pair sold, Stephen will donate an insecticide-treated bed net to Nothing But Nets, protecting kids, refugees, and families from malaria.

After five years of strong leadership under Dr. Mark Dybul, we look forward to working in partnership with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria’s new Executive Director Peter Sands. No other organization has contributed more resources to the fight against malaria than the Global Fund, including nearly 800 million bed nets delivered to families around the world. The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation (ETAF) and the United Nations Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign announced today a partnership to combat HIV and malaria in southern rural Malawi. Actor Scott Wolf, his wife Kelley, and actress Alexandra Daddario traveled there with the two organizations to see first-hand how they are tackling both global health issues.
